Depending on its locale or certain characteristics, a stream may be referred to as a branch, brook, beck, burn, creek, kill, lick, rill, river syke, bayou, rivulet, or run. In some countries or communities a stream may be defined by its size. In the United States a stream is classified as a watercourse less than 60 feet (18 metres) wide. Streams are important as conduits in the water cycle, instruments in groundwater recharge, and they serve as corridors for fish and wildlife migration. The biological habitat in the immediate vicinity of a stream is called a riparian zone. Given the status of the ongoing Holocene extinction, streams play an important corridor role in connecting fragmented habitats and thus in conserving biodiversity. Water percolating down through the rock erodes it, forming caves and tunnels which can collapse, leaving sinkholes in the surface or even small ponds and lakes. Because surface streams would cut into the upper rock, most streams in areas of karst topography will eventually go underground. This would leave the area with few streams, if any. Q. My friend and I were having a sword fight, and we crossed beams. We expected the two urine streams to combine and create one centered urine stream (a "Y" shape), but what actually happend was our streams just continued in their original direction, as if they never collided at all (an "X" shape). Each incoming stream before its collision with the other one has a momentum dm/dt v = dp with dm/dt the mass per second flow and v the velocity of each stream. The direction of dp is the direction of the two streams as they collide... i.e., the two tops of your expected Y. So, according to good old Newton, that's the direction of the rebounding (colliding) streams as the two momenta are conserved. In other words, the two Y tops will rebound (not pass through) and bounce off each other with the two X bottoms as you noted.
