In linguistics and ethnology, Semitic (from the Biblical "Shem", Hebrew: שם, translated as "name", Arabic: ساميّ) was first used to refer to a language family of largely Middle Eastern origin, now called the Semitic languages. This family includes the ancient and modern forms of Akkadian, Amharic, Arabic, Aramaic, Ge'ez, Hebrew, Maltese, Phoenician, Tigre and Tigrinya among others.

As language studies are interwoven with cultural studies, the term also came to describe the extended cultures and ethnicities, as well as the history of these varied peoples as associated by close geographic and linguistic distribution.

Is it impossible to be critical of Israel and not be labeled anti-semitic?
Q. I believe that debate is good and healthy, but it seems that anyone who dares to question Israeli policy is labeled anti-semitic. Does Israel have zero tolerance for thinkers?

A. I agree. Seems like Israel is given a free pass more often than any other nation.

Do Sanskrit and Semitic languages have any ties in origin?
Q. Are they linked or not at all? Also I heard that Sanskrit is Vedic, so what exactly does vedic mean? Is there a difference?
Asked by Kima - Sat May 1 00:57:56 2010 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. No. Vedic relates to the Vedas; ancient religious writings comparable to our Bible and at least as old. Follow the links below to become a cunning linguist. Evidently Sanskrit developed to the far East of the area where the proto-Semitic languages developed. There was not enough cross-pollination because of geographical separation, so your answer is no, although Sanskrit did impact many modern tongues like Greek & Persian.

Is it possible for a Jewish person to make anti-Semitic remarks the way other ethnicity's do to themselves?
Q. Latino, african-american and asians are often called racist for being critical of their own ethnicity's wayward ones, and stereotypes so does it rate the same for Jewish people? Is it simply the core of the thing that is remarked upon or does it pass if done by one of your own?

A. Yes, it is possible. I think we're usually more open to inner criticism, but Jewish-antisemitism and self-hatred do exist. Bobby Fischer is a fine example:
