Qigong is the Mandarin Chinese term used to describe various Chinese systems of physical and mental training for health, martial arts and self-enlightenment.

Qigong or Chi kung (an equivalent term derived from Wade-Giles Romanization) is an English Romanization of two Chinese characters: (氣) and Gōng (功). The dictionary definition for the word “qi” usually involved the meaning of “breathing”, “air”, “gas” and “vapor” but it can also be used in the context of describing the relationship between matter, energy and spirit. The dictionary definition for the word “Gong” (功) is that of achievement or results. The two words are combined to describe systems and methods of “energy cultivation” and the manipulation of intrinsic energy within living organisms.

There are many forms of qigong originating from different segments within Chinese society. The traditional Chinese Medical community uses qigong for preventive and curative functions. The Chinese martial arts community considered qigong training an important component in enhancing martial abilities. The religious community, including both Taoist and Buddhist traditions, uses qigong as part of their meditative practice. Confucian scholars practice qigong to improve their moral character. In the 1940s and the 1950s, the Chinese government tried to integrate those disparate approaches into one coherent system with the intention of establishing firmer scientific bases for those practices and as part of the political philosophy of the Cultural Revolution. This attempt is considered by some sinologists as the start of the modern interpretation of qigong science. Through the forces of migration, tourism and globalization, the practice and the promise of qigong has spread from the Chinese community to the world.

The practices of Qigong are differentiated by four types of training: dynamic, static, meditative and activities requiring external aids. Dynamic training involves special movement and applies to exercise such as Tai ji quan. Static training requires the practitioner to hold the body in a particular posture. Meditative training involves visualization or focus on specific ideas, sounds, images, concepts or breathing patterns. There are also training methods that involve an external agent such as the ingestion of herbs, massages, physical manipulation or interactions with other living organisms. A qigong system can be composed of one or more types of training.

Qigong is considered to be part of alternative medicine , with positive effects on various ailments. Some researchers are skeptical of some of the claims for qigong and label the subject matter a “pseudoscience”. In addition, the origin and nature of qigong practice has led to misconceptions and misuses. The abuse of qigong practice had led to the formation of cults and potential psychiatric problems.

can qigong training really help Develop how to see auras better?
Q. i was doing a little reading and this is the only thing i can find so far. if you know any other sites tell me i want to learn more.

A. No, because auras really don't exist. That is just clap-trap wrapped up in mystical sounding nonsense. People who "see auras" really are just demonstrating eye-fatigue. If you stare at a dark object in a bright room, you'll see a light afterimage when you look away. There is a really small electrical field around our bodies that takes specialized equipment to see, but that amounts to static charges around the body. Nothing really mystical there.

Can you effectively learn Qigong from videos and books?
Q. I have no instructors for it anywhere NEAR my house. When I do the exercises I feel energy, but I just don't know if I could use it as effectively as if a teacher were teaching me

A. I began studying qigong in 1985 and I would have to say,yes you absolutely can! For the most part, you can learn about qigong from books, but to learn the movements, videos are far superior. There are many styles of qigong. Some very simple and others very complex. To learn the more complex forms, you would need live instruction. My advice is to keep it simple. Studies have shown that there are no greater benefits in learning more complex qigong styles than simple one's. Master Chunyi Lin, who created Spring Forest Qigong, agrees with this, and he is a very accomplished qigong Master. Qigong is a huge study. All life is qigong. I'm assuming you are mostly interested in the health benefits. But, if you end up pursuing a deeper… [cont.]

qigong chi kung pushing mountain shaolin?
Q. there is a chi kung excercise called pushing the mountains in shaolin school which is merely pushing ur arm forward visualizing a mountain. It's said that it increases the power of your arms, but what i can't understand is that, if the muscles of ur arm aren't hardened in the way pushups will harden it, how on earth is your arm power's going to increase just by such a slow non-sweating visualizing excercise?

A. It's interesting to see so many Qigong references... There's been three questions in the past few days all dealing with some aspect of qi/Chi. Big Foot has it pretty much down as what you have to train and that its very difficult to reach the latter. There are a lot of "magicians" who like to claim this ability but they're not even close. The yin side of training... or internal training takes a lifetime to reach and as such is not a common goal. It's only something that people like to claim they can do. I'm sure I'll be on the chopping block for this but I have been there and seen it happen in real life. Not mountains mind you, but I've been privey to having somebody push me without touching me. It's a strange sensation as it's… [cont.]
