A phenomenon (from Greek φαινόμενoν), plural phenomena or phenomenons, is any observable occurrence. In popular usage, a phenomenon often refers to an extraordinary event. In scientific usage, a phenomenon is any event that is observable, however commonplace it might be, even if it requires the use of instrumentation to observe it. For example, in physics, a phenomenon may be a feature of matter, energy, or spacetime, such as Isaac Newton's observations of the moon's orbit and of gravity, or Galileo Galilei's observations of the motion of a pendulum.

Use in gemology

In gemology a phenomenon is an unusual optical effect that is displayed by a gem. Play-of-color, labradorescence, iridescence, adularescence, chatoyancy, asterism, aventurescence, lustre and color change are all phenomena of this type.

What is the phenomena called when you still hear a bell sound after it stops ringing?
Q. I hope someone knows this because I have found nothing on the internet for it. What is the phenomena called when you think you can still hear a bell sound, even though it has stopped ringing, due to over exposure to the sound in the first place? FYI: This doesn't just apply to bells but it is probably the best example I have, as I think many people have had the awful experience of sitting through a faulty fire/burglar alarm at some point in life. Thanks in advance. b.

What states were the home to paranormal phenomena in the 1930s?
Q. What are the main states in the U.S. that were known for paranormal phenomena in the 1930s (I need the answer as I am doing a project for school). Thank you!

A. I don't believe there is a specific answer to this question. No matter where you go, any state or region, there is a legend to be told, people tell stories in Boston, New York, Chicago, Louisville, Indianapolis, Menaqua, Nashville, Little Rock, San Diego, almost every town, can tell you about some kind of paranormal phenomena--- If you are looking for the activity that may have been in your area at that time, I suggest visiting the local library or even the local senior center, many seniors would love to tell the local stories and legends to a young person.

What is important about the noumena and phenomena?
Q. So if we know that the phenomena is our perception and the noumena is the reality, then how is is important? In what situation do we use this knowledge?

A. Do not be fooled. Noumena is NOT the "reality." Plato said essences are unknowable because they are in heaven. Aristotle said essences are in the things themselves. The Stoics, Wm. of Occam, Ayn Rand and others said essences were concepts. Kant took Aristotle's metaphysics "in the things themselves" and applied Plato's epistemology of "unknowablity" to them. Noumena do not exist. "The man who . . . closed the door of philosophy to reason, was Immanuel Kant . . . . "Kant s expressly stated purpose was to save the morality of self-abnegation and self-sacrifice. He knew that it could not survive without a mystic base and what it had to be saved from was reason. "Even apart from the fact that Kant s theory of the categories as the… [cont.]
