Oceanography (compound of the Greek words ωκεανός meaning "ocean" and γράφω meaning "to write"), also called oceanology or marine science, is the branch of Earth science that studies the ocean. It covers a wide range of topics, including marine organisms and ecosystem dynamics; ocean currents, waves, and geophysical fluid dynamics; plate tectonics and the geology of the sea floor; and fluxes of various chemical substances and physical properties within the ocean and across its boundaries. These diverse topics reflect multiple disciplines that oceanographers blend to further knowledge of the world ocean and understanding of processes within it: biology, chemistry, geology, meteorology, and physics.

Is there any marine science/biology based highschool in Orange County?
Q. Does anyone know if there is a Marine Science/ Marine Biology based highschool in Orange County? I'm really into marine bio & such like that, and I really want to go to a highschool that bases on that, so I can get into a Marine Biology college much easier. My parents don't care what the cost is. Haha. I live right by Disneyland, so the closer the better. Thanks guys!

A. Have you visited the campuses around you? Have you inquired at Cal State Fullerton or UC Irvine and talked to their marine biologists to find out what high schools might have programs in marine biology? Have you asked at the Marine Institute at Dana Point for advice? Have you asked any of the marine institutes on Catalina Island (which might have a high school that might have such a program)? You haven't done your homework yet... and there are resources for you to ask and answer your question.

A. There are jobs, they're just not numerous. There are so many things in the oceans that you could study, the possibilities are endless. Languages are also a really good idea to know, especially if you're going to a foreign country to do your research. Employers will always favour someone having a foreign language background over someone who doesn't, even if it's a weird language that isn't commonly spoken.
