Frequency is the number of occurrences of a repeating event per unit time. It is also referred to as temporal frequency. The period is the duration of one cycle in a repeating event, so the period is the reciprocal of the frequency.

Definitions and units

For cyclical processes, such as rotation, oscillations, or waves, frequency is defined as a number of cycles per unit time. In physics and engineering disciplines, such as optics, acoustics, and radio, frequency is usually denoted by a Latin letter f or by a Greek letter ν (nu).

In SI units, the unit of frequency is hertz (Hz), named after the German physicist Heinrich Hertz. For example, 1 Hz means that an event repeats once per second.

A traditional unit of measure used with rotating mechanical devices is revolutions per minute, abbreviated RPM. 60 RPM equals one hertz.

The period is usually denoted as T, and is the reciprocal of the frequency f:

The SI unit for period is the second.

What is the desired frequency I can use to detect an asbestos waterline by using a GPR?
Q. My equipment is a DitchWitch 2150GR Ground Penetrating Radar and I dont have formal training on how to operate it,how can I select a desired frequency to detect asbestos pipes? What is the frequency?
Asked by LLOYD GUADANA - Fri Aug 7 09:16:48 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Read the manual: quote/ The 2150GR system can be used with one of the following antennas ATS 250 for high signal penetration. ATS 700 for better resolution near the surface /endquote where 250 or 700 is the frequency If you know where the pipe starts/ends, then detect it there.

Whats the difference between High frequency and Low frequency hearing loss?
Q. I have hearing loss in my right ear (60%) and my army recruiter told me, if its High frequency hearing loss its a good chance that it would get Waived. I will have to go through MEPS and get cleared, But I would like to know before hand. So please be specific.
Asked by James S - Fri Aug 22 16:09:09 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Sound occurs over a wide spectrum of frequencies. The human ear is sensitive to a frequency band withing that spectrum. Since sounds occur at different frequencies, you will not be able to hear the sounds at the high end. The frequency that dogs can hear covers a different range. That is why a dog can respond to a human voice, but also to a silent dog whistle which is too high of a frequency for humans. The most common frequency hearing loss for men is the same frequency that their wives speak.

How to hook up a frequency meter for a generator?
Q. I've got a generator, and I need to set the frequency, so I bought a cheap frequency meter on ebay. It's a Wacline N20394A analog panel meter apparently off an old Kurz & Root generator. It measures 55-65 Hz. It has two terminals on the back, one is marked with a + sign, the other is unmarked. There is a little spring like wire that bridges the two terminals in the back. I have no instructions, diagrams, etc, and have no idea how to hook up this meter. Anyone out there have any ideas? Ed.

A. I think that jesem47 is correct if you have the complete meter. Sometimes panel meters that are marked as indicating various things are simply 0-1mA dc movements that must be connected to some kind of signal processing circuit that converts the measured quantity to a 0-1mA signal. If that is the case, applying 24 VAC through a fuse larger than 1mA could fry the meter. Of course, if you don't have the complete meter, you probably don't care what happens to it. If you want to check it out completely without frying it, start with a series resistor of sufficient resistance to limit the current to 1mA with what ever voltage you apply for test purposes. You should probably remove the wire from the back. It may be a shorting wire that was… [cont.]
