From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An ocean current is a continuous, directed movement of ocean water generated by the forces acting upon this mean flow, such as breaking waves, wind, Coriolis force, temperature and salinity differences and tides caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun. Depth contours, shoreline configurations and interaction with other currents influence a current's direction and strength. Ocean currents can flow for great distances, and together they create the great flow of the global conveyor belt which plays a dominant part in determining the climate of many of the Earth’s regions. Perhaps the most striking example is the Gulf Stream, which makes northwest Europe much more temperate than any other region at the same latitude. Another example is the Hawaiian Islands, where the climate is cooler (sub-tropical) than the tropical latitudes in which they are located, due to the effect of the California Current. Antarctic bottom water Deep Currents: Complementing the surface currents is a series of currents in the deep ocean. These tend to be slow moving and generally from high latitude toward the equator. The water flowing in these deep currents -- North Atlantic Deep Water and Antarctic Bottom Water -- are easily identified by temperature, oxygen content, and salinity. Answered by perturbed2006 - Thu Jun 8 00:39:06 2006 pirates and captain adrift in the ocean, how much can the current or wind move them each day ? Q. pirates and captain adrift in the ocean, how much can the current or wind move them each day ? I think the first reports stated the attack on the alabama occurred 280 miles from land. Now the latest reports say their location is 200 miles(approximate) ,which i believe is the boundary for internal / international waters. Could crossing this boundary affect the Navy and how they proceed or use of force? info i find says currents are south along the coast and usually wind is from the land out into the ocean in an east direction . Can anyone verify this ? Asked by Rex C - Fri Apr 10 19:31:00 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Not much. Doesn't matter much though, the pirates are dead on President Obama's orders and we have the hostage back.
