The Roman Empire was the post-Republican phase of the ancient Roman civilization, characterised by an autocratic form of government and large territorial holdings in Europe and around the Mediterranean. The term is used to describe the Roman state during and after the time of the first emperor, Augustus. The 500-year-old Roman Republic, which preceded it, had been weakened and subverted through several civil wars. Several events are commonly proposed to mark the transition from Republic to Empire, including Julius Caesar's appointment as perpetual dictator (44 BC), the Battle of Actium (2 September 31 BC), and the Roman Senate's granting to Octavian the honorific Augustus (4 January 27 BC). Roman expansion began in the days of the Republic, but reached its zenith under Emperor Trajan. At this territorial peak, the Roman Empire controlled approximately 6.5 million km² of land surface. Because of the Empire's vast extent and long endurance, Roman influence upon the language, religion, architecture, philosophy, law, and government of nations around the world lasts to this day. In the late 3rd century AD, Diocletian established the practice of dividing authority between four co-emperors, in order to better secure the vast territory. During the following decades the empire was often divided along an East/West axis. After the death of Theodosius I in 395 it was divided for the last time. The Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 as Romulus Augustus was forced to abdicate by Odoacer. The Eastern Roman or Byzantine Empire ended in 1453 with the death of Constantine XI and the capture of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks led by Mehmed II. From Wikipedia under the

Why are its people called Italians and not Romans or Latins? Asked by I.M. Justaman - Sun Feb 24 10:01:32 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Empires come and go, and the Roman empire came and went. Ittaly was made up of a lot of different states for many centuries, and were only united into one country in the 19th century. People from different regions of italy would probably object to being called Romans. "At Constantine's death in Nicomedia in AD 337, 3 sons & 2 of his nephews were destined by the late emperor to succeed him. Though 2 of those sons were absent from Nicomedia. With the consent of the third, Constantius, the other members of the imperial family, except two young cousins were slaughtered by the soldiery. The empire was thereafter by agreement parted between the 3 sons." It goes on quite a bit and very informative. Q. Given their importance in the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, what made the Germans so successful? help me pleaseee!!??? Asked by james - Thu Jun 24 11:24:06 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think you answered your own question. The Germanic success during the process of Roman disintegration was to acquire land and establish their own rule i.e. independent kingdoms, on formerly Roman territory. For example Geiseric established his Vandal kingdom in once-Roman North Africa, while Euric founded an independent Visigoth kingdom in western Europe c 474.They were able to do this because the western Roman Empire was, all too often, unable to stop them. Its weakness stemmed from lack of sufficient military strength, and the crux of that problem was a general loss of backing from its own citizens. In other words, the Germanic peoples succeded because their opponent was fatally weakened. This has often been blamed on loss of North… [cont.] Answered by Tim D - Thu Jun 24 13:20:51 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Roman Empire" Gebhard: Every American should have a good education - Lake County News
