Nitrogen (pronounced /ˈnaɪtrɵdʒɨn/ NYE-tro-jin) is a chemical element that has the symbol N, atomic number of 7 and atomic mass 14.00674 u. Elemental nitrogen is a colorless, odorless, tasteless and mostly inert diatomic gas at standard conditions, constituting 78.08% by volume of Earth's atmosphere. Many industrially important compounds, such as ammonia, nitric acid, organic nitrates (propellants and explosives), and cyanides, contain nitrogen. The extremely strong bond in elemental nitrogen dominates nitrogen chemistry, causing difficulty for both organisms and industry in breaking the bond to convert the N2 into useful compounds, but releasing large amounts of often useful energy, when these compounds burn, explode, or decay back into nitrogen gas. The element nitrogen was discovered by Scottish physician Daniel Rutherford in 1772. Nitrogen occurs in all living organisms. It is a constituent element of amino acids and thus of proteins, and of nucleic acids (DNA and RNA). It resides in the chemical structure of almost all neurotransmitters, and is a defining component of alkaloids, biological molecules produced by many organisms. From Wikipedia under the

Q. Nitrogen is dissolved in water with the total pressure of gas (Nitrogen + water vapor) over the water being 1.20 atm. The temperature is 25o C. What is the concentration of Nitrogen in the water? Give your answer in g/L . The vapor pressure of water at 25.0oC is 23.8 mm Hg. Note that kH has units of mol/L --- mm Hg any help would be greatly appreciated! Can I add nitrogen through other fertilizers that I can get?
Q. I have been letting leaves rot into mulch, but what else can I use to get nitrogen into my soil? Asked by Tom_ferrara - Mon Mar 17 16:38:35 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Most lawn fertilizers are primarily nitrogen. It is always the first number of the three numbers on the sack. A time release type is better because it is less likely to burn any of your plants. You can also use ammonia nitrate fertilizer but it is pretty hot stuff: Answered by oil field trash - Mon Mar 17 16:54:21 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Nitrogen" |
