Mass spectrometry (MS) is an analytical technique for the determination of the elemental composition of a sample or molecule. It is also used for elucidating the chemical structures of molecules, such as peptides and other chemical compounds. The MS principle consists of ionizing chemical compounds to generate charged molecules or molecule fragments and measurement of their mass-to-charge ratios. In a typical MS procedure:
MS instruments consist of three modules: an ion source, which can convert gas phase sample molecules into ions (or, in the case of electrospray ionization, move ions that exist in solution into the gas phase); a mass analyzer, which sorts the ions by their masses by applying electromagnetic fields; and a detector, which measures the value of an indicator quantity and thus provides data for calculating the abundances of each ion present. The technique has both qualitative and quantitative uses. These include identifying unknown compounds, determining the isotopic composition of elements in a molecule, and determining the structure of a compound by observing its fragmentation. Other uses include quantifying the amount of a compound in a sample or studying the fundamentals of gas phase ion chemistry (the chemistry of ions and neutrals in a vacuum). MS is now in very common use in analytical laboratories that study physical, chemical, or biological properties of a great variety of compounds. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by michael b - Sun Jan 25 19:52:46 2009 what are the applications of datamining on mass spectrometry data? Q. what are the applications of datamining on mass spectrometry data? Asked by pankaj b - Fri Mar 30 10:25:22 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. When you run a sample on a mass spec it records a value for 500 - 1000 wavelengths. If you are just interested in a specific wavelength for what you are trying to study you could run a datamining application which would select and group the wavelengths you're interested in from different samples. Datamining can also be used to determine association rules (patterns discovered in data that includes the concept of transaction, basket or group), which could be helpful in research. Q. In this proteomic paper ,the material and methods part divided into 3 parts: -Tissue Preparation -2-D PAGE -HPLC-Tandem Mass Spectrometry for Gel Spots I wanna know about "2-D PAGE" , "HPLC-Tandem Mass Spectrometry for Gel Spots". TQ Asked by eTeRnItY - Sat Sep 15 11:22:28 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. 2D PAGE (polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) is a technique that uses polymerized acrylamide to form a gel that proteins (and even DNA, but not usually) can be pushed through with an electric current to analyze them by mass. HPLC uses various properties (mass, charge, affinity, etc, etc...) to separate molecules. If it is proteomics they're talking about, they are probably separating proteins. Mass spec. uses energy to ionize molecules and push them into a space where a magnet or ionic energy causes them to move and land on a detector at different places depending on their charge/mass ratio. Now, let's put it all together. Say you have a mixture of proteins and you run it on a PAGE. You'll see various little spots on that page… [cont.] Answered by BLLYRCKS - Sat Sep 15 13:43:49 2007 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Mass spectrometry" ORNL's Buchanan named 2010 American Chemical Society Fellow - EurekAlert (press release)
