Chicago ( /ʃɨˈkɑːɡoʊ/ (help·info) or /ʃɨˈkɔːɡoʊ/) is the largest city in both Illinois and the Midwest, and the third most populous city in the United States, with over 2.8 million residents. Its metropolitan area, commonly named "Chicagoland", is the 26th most populous in the world, home to an estimated 9.7 million people spread across the U.S. states of Illinois, Wisconsin, and Indiana. Chicago is primarily located within Cook County, with the exception of a small northwestern portion of the city at O'Hare International Airport that is located within DuPage County.

Chicago was founded in 1833, near a portage between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River watershed. The Potawatomi were forcibly removed from their land following the Treaty of Chicago. The city became a major transportation and telecommunications hub in North America. Today, the city retains its status as a major hub, both for industry and infrastructure, with O'Hare International Airport being the second busiest airport in the world. In 2008, the city hosted 45.6 million domestic and overseas visitors.

In modern times, the city has taken on an additional dimension as a center for business and finance and is listed as one of the world's top ten Global Financial Centers. Chicago is a stronghold of the Democratic Party and has been home to many influential politicians, including the current President of the United States, Barack Obama. The World Cities Study Group at Loughborough University rated Chicago as an "alpha world city" due to Chicago's important role in the global economic system. In a 2010 survey collaboration between Foreign Policy and A.T Kearney ranking the world's top global cities, Chicago ranked 6th behind Paris and Hong Kong and above Los Angeles and Singapore. The ranking asseses five dimensions: value of capital markets, diversity of human capital, international information resources, international cultural resources, and political influence.

Globally recognized, Chicago has numerous nicknames, which reflect the impressions and opinions about historical and contemporary Chicago. The best known include: "Chi-town", "Windy City", "Second City", and the "City of Big Shoulders". Chicago has also been called "the most American of big cities".

Why do cops in Chicago let the local street gangs run wild?
Q. Other cities like NYC have clamped down on their street gangs to an extent. Chicago really hasn't; street gangs are free to roam around that city and gun down rivals at will. Why do Chicago cops allow this to happen? You know things are bad when the murder rate is almost 1/3rd higher than the rate in gangbanger-filled Los Angeles. Why don't Chicago's cops crack down hard? Are the rumors true that many cops in the city actually work for certain gangs, and protect them from other cops?

A. Actually CPD is now down to 10,300 officers. The city lies about how many they have. They have not hired enough to replace mandatory retirement in years. The officers they have cannot cover what is going on. Morale is 0. The former FBI agent who is boss is hated. He never did real street police work in his life and does not understand how police do things. No morale = less police work The cops arrest the ganbangers but the courts let them go. In case you do not know the county is under federal court supervision. They cannot hold people in jail for long because of overcrowding. so they get arrested and get out of jail in a day or two even if they have a high bond. Then they intimidate any witnesses so when the case comes up the states… [cont.]

What City of Chicago environmental issues you think go overlooked?
Q. Is there anything the city should focus on more? Is there anything you think needs to be researched and possibly corrected? If your city isn't Chicago, are there any issues in your particular city you'd like to see studied more as well? Thanks!

What parts of Chicago are ok to stay in for vacation? Which areas charge for parking?
Q. I am planning our August Vacation for Chicago and am booking a hotel for a week. The area that I am think about the most is near O'hare as this seems reasonably safe, doesn't charge for parking (which can add up) and is a short distance walk to the "El" to take into chicago. Other areas I am looking at: Lincoln Park Midway Airport Area Millennium Park, Loop & Grant Park Area North Michigan Ave - River North Area skokie - Niles - Evanston Skokie/Niles seems ok. Is this a nice area Never been to chicago.

A. Lincoln Park - you will have parking issues here. Midway Airport Area - an alternative to O'hare. The Orange Line runs from Midway to the Loop. You can catch another train to Wrigley Field and places north. The Magnificent Mile (north Michigan Ave.) is within walking distance. There is very little to do in the Midwa area at night. Ditto O'Hare. Millennium Park, Loop & Grant Park Area - very nice. Millennium Park is a great park. Grant Park is just to the south of Millennium Park. The lakefront is a short walk away. IMO, this is where you will spend all your time due to it's proximity to shopping, nightlife, activities. The Loops is the original downtown area and is named after the 'L' track that loops around it. Parking will… [cont.]

  • I came to discover that Chicago is that most American of American cities, but one where citizens from more than 130 nations inhabit a rich tapestry of distinctive neighborhoods. Each one of those neighborhoods -- from Greektown to the Ukrainian Village; from Devon to Pilsen to Washington Park -- has its own unique character, its own unique history, its songs, its language. But each is also part of our city -- one city -- a city where I finally found a home.
