NounThe National Scientific Publishers encyclopedia (Polish)encyclopedia (plural encyclopedias)
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. An encyclopedia (also spelled encyclopaedia or encyclopædia) is a type of reference work, a compendium holding a summary of information from either all branches of knowledge or a particular branch of knowledge. Encyclopedias are divided into articles or entries, which are usually accessed alphabetically by article name. Encyclopedia entries are longer and more detailed than those in most dictionaries. Generally speaking, unlike dictionary entries, which focus on linguistic information about words, encyclopedia articles focus on factual information about a thing or concept for which the article name stands. Encyclopedias have existed for around 2,000 years; the oldest still in existence, Naturalis Historia, was written in Roman times by Pliny the Elder. The modern encyclopedia evolved out of dictionaries around the 17th century. Historically, some encyclopedias were contained in one volume, but some, such as the Encyclopaedia Britannica, became huge multi-volume works. Some modern encyclopedias are electronic and are often freely available. The word encyclopaedia comes from the Koine Greek "ἐγκυκλοπαιδεία", from Greek "ἐγκύκλιος παιδεία", transliterated "enkyklios paideia": "enkyklios" (ἐγκύκλιος), meaning "circular, round" + "paideia" (παιδεία), meaning "education, rearing of a child". Together, the phrase literally translates as a "well rounded education" or "general knowledge". Indeed, the purpose of an encyclopedia is to collect knowledge disseminated around the globe; to set forth its general system to the men with whom we live, and transmit it to those who will come after us, so that the work of preceding centuries will not become useless to the centuries to come; and so that our offspring, becoming better instructed, will at the same time become more virtuous and happy, and that we should not die without having rendered a service to the human race in the future years to come. — Diderot From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Where can I find a free and reliable online encyclopedia? Q. I don't trust Wikipedia and Britannica just turned to a pay encyclopedia. I'm not looking for a dictionary, I'm looking for an encyclopedia. The encyclopedia should have good citations as well. Asked by Dark Icarus - Tue Dec 8 22:20:05 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Regardless of what people may say, Wikipedia.org is a reliable online encyclopedia. They have citations on their infomation at the bottom of the page. If sources are not sited a message will appear at the top of the page. Remember that Wikipedia gets their info from books and internet sources just like one would if they are writing a paper. You probably shouldn't site Wikipedia as your souce because teachers are prejudic against it. You can also go to the site where the info was taken from at the links at the bottom of the page. Answered by Elena - Tue Dec 8 22:33:28 2009 When citing an encyclopedia, do I need to mention the exact page? Q. I know that quotes from general books do require the page to be mentioned, but is the same necessary for a dictionary or encyclopedia? Or is it implied that the specific information would obviously be found under the discussed word? I am reffering to an academic essay in which I discuss the meaning, etymology, usage etc of certain terms and use dictionaries for reference.
