Discovery is the act of detecting something new. With reference to science and academic disciplines, discovery is the observation of new phenomena, new actions, or new events and providing new reasoning to explain the knowledge gathered through such observations with previously acquired knowledge from abstract thought and everyday experiences.

Description

New discoveries are acquired through various senses and are usually assimilated, merging with pre-existing knowledge and actions. Questioning is a major form of human thought and interpersonal communication, and plays a key role in discovery. Discoveries are often made due to questions. With reference to science and academic disciplines, discovery is the observation of new phenomena, new actions, or new events and providing new reasoning to explain the knowledge gathered through such observations with previously acquired knowledge from abstract thought and everyday experiences. In scientific research, exploration is one of three purposes of research (the other two being description and explanation). Discovery is made by providing observational evidence and attempts to develop an initial, rough understanding of some phenomenon. Some discoveries lead to the invention of objects, processes, or techniques. A discovery may sometimes be based on earlier discoveries, collaborations or ideas, and the process of discovery requires at least the awareness that an existing concept or method can be modified or transformed. However, some discoveries also represent a radical breakthrough in knowledge.

How was it discovered that the speed of light is constant relative to everything?
Q. I know that this was an important discovery that got Einstein wondering. And it eventually led to the theory of relativity. But how was it discovered?

A. Michelson and Morley did an experiment where they measured the speed of light when Earth was moving in one direction in its orbit, than about 6 months later when it was moving in the opposite direction. That way, they were able to get a large enough difference in velocity in what they considered to be a relatively stationary aether. The 'shocker' was when they found, not the speed of the aether, but identical speeds for light. Einstein took a leap of faith in proposing the theory he did, based on his conviction that the universe was an orderly place, and that if one could not establish an absolute speed using mechanical means - using matter, one would not be able to establish it using electromagnetic means - using energy. How was Pompeii accidently discovered in 1748 and by whom?
Q. After Italy's Mount Vesuvius buried Pompeii, the city wasn't rediscovered untill 1748. I was curious as to how it was discovered. Was it stumbled upon by some kids? Were there clues and someone went looking?

A. It was discovered by workers who were digging the foundation for a palace for Charles III of Naples. There were some clues as to the location of the city from the writings of Pliny the Younger who described the destruction, but attempts to find the city had failed. It was only found by accident. I don't know who was the very first to find the city, probably some workman forgotten by history, but the excavation was led by Karl Weber, a Swiss engineer. Charles III payed for and supported the excavations, but they were generally poorly done and many artifacts were plundered as treasure, while Charles seemed to be most interested in getting artifacts to decorate his palace with. A lot was probably lost thanks to those first excavations.

What something interesting you have discovered about your ancestors?
Q. I have just recently discovered that a lot of my ancestors were freemasons. I have to admit that that is pretty badass.

A. Oh several things...however nothing that has shocked me, or very different to most peoples ancestrial finds. So apart from 'shock, horror' people marrying after their child was born, or having a baby 5 months after they marry...I suppose we are more 'tolerant' in 2010 than they were in 1860. Being told when I started by my gran, the wrong name for her father in law, denying anything to do with a gravestone in the village grave yard as having anything to do with the family, yet the name on it was an unusual first 'family' name...found 'he' wasn't buried under his headstone, but in the next village 6 miles away, found 'he' was her father in law, (not the great uncle she had claimed as her F in L who had no children)...did she think I… [cont.]
