When writing the formula for compounds, how do you know when to use parentheses?
Q. One thing I do not understand in chemistry is when a question asks 'write the formulas for the following ionic compounds', how do you know when your answer needs parentheses? For example, one question asked the formula for copper(II) nitrate, the answer is Cu(NO3)2. But in a question asking for the formula for sodium hydroxide, the answer is NaOH (with no parenthesis). So how do you know when you are supposed to use parentheses?

A. You use parentheses when the formula contains more than one of the same polyatomic ion. in the example you gave, nitrate is a polyatomic ion of NO3 with a charge of negative 1. copper (II) has a charge of positive two. So to balance it out, you need two nitrates. you cannot write NO32 because then it looks like there is 32 oxygen. when you write it as (NO3)2, you have two polyatomic ions.

How to differentiate between two compounds with identical melting points without using spectroscopy ?
Q. How to differentiate between two compounds with identical melting points without using spectroscopy ? The compounds with near identical melting points are benzopinacol and benzopinacolone.

A. What you do is called a mixed melting point. If you take a couple of samples of your unknown compound and mix them each with about an equal amount of one of the two compounds, one will be a mixture while the other will be pure substance. The pure sample will melt at the same melting point as the unknown, while the mixture will show a melting point depression. The unknown must be the compound that you mixed with it that gave no MP depression.
