How do you store breast milk/colostrum for use later?
Q. My daughter had a baby last Friday and she cannot get him to latch on. She is pumping, and making tons of breast milk or she calls it colostrum. How is she supposed to store it for later use? What kind of container and should she be freezing it and how long does it last in the fridge?

A. If you go to Target or Wal Mart they have breast milk baggies. Very useful and they show how much milk is in the bag and you can label them with the date stored. You can keep breast milk in the freezer for up to a year, in the fridge for I think a couple of months and out on the counter for 24 hours. Dont ever refreeze but you can keep the defrosted milk in the fridge for a few days so you don't ever have to waste any.

Increase in colostrum and burst of energy-am I in early labor?
Q. I've had clear colostrum since the first day of my seventh month, but it came and went. Now it is thick and yellow, and there is much more of it. I've had mild period like cramps on and off for the last week, and today I woke up and had LoTs of energy- I actually wanted to excersise! I am only 30 weeks, so I am a bit worried- this isn't a sign of early labor is it?

A. No, it's not a sign of early labour, just part of the process as your body gets closer to giving birth. I have had loads of bursts of energy throughout my pregnancy and have also has a lot of colostrum since I was also about 30 weeks. Am now 40w+3d and still waiting.

Does leaking colostrum in the last 2 months od pregnancy mean I'll have enough milk to breastfeed?
Q. I really want to breastfeed my baby which is due next week or so and I've been leaking colostrum for quite some time now. Does it mean I'll be producing enough milk? My friends had problems there and they never leaked anything until the birth...Any experiences??Thanks!!!

A. Whether or not you leak a drop of colostrum, you have about a 98% chance of having enough milk for your baby. So sure, leaking is a good sign, but even if you didn't leak at all, you would be able to breastfeed. (I will speculate that your friends' problems were lot a lack of milk, but lack of education and support. Insufficient milk is really VERY unusual.)
