Chiropractic is a health care discipline and profession that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine, under the hypothesis that these disorders affect general health via the nervous system. It is generally categorized as complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), a characterization that many chiropractors reject. Although chiropractors have many attributes of primary care providers, chiropractic has more of the attributes of a medical specialty like dentistry or podiatry. The main chiropractic treatment technique involves manual therapy, including manipulation of the spine, other joints, and soft tissues; treatment also includes exercises and health and lifestyle counseling. Traditional chiropractic assumes that a vertebral subluxation or spinal joint dysfunction interferes with the body's function and its innate intelligence, a vitalistic notion that brings ridicule from mainstream science and medicine.

D.D. Palmer founded chiropractic in the 1890s and his son B.J. Palmer helped to expand it in the early 20th century. It has two main groups: "straights", now the minority, emphasize vitalism, innate intelligence and spinal adjustments, and consider subluxations to be the leading cause of all disease; "mixers" are more open to mainstream and alternative medical techniques such as exercise, massage, nutritional supplements, and acupuncture. Chiropractic is well established in the U.S., Canada and Australia.

Throughout its history, chiropractic has been controversial. For most of its existence it has battled with mainstream medicine, sustained by ideas such as subluxation that are not based on solid science. Among chiropractors there are significant disagreements about vaccination. The American Medical Association called chiropractic an "unscientific cult" and boycotted it until losing an antitrust case in 1987. Chiropractic has had a strong political base and sustained demand for services; in recent decades, it has gained more legitimacy and greater acceptance among medical physicians and health plans in the U.S., and evidence-based medicine has been used to review research studies and generate practice guidelines.

Many studies of treatments used by chiropractors have been conducted, with conflicting results. Collectively, systematic reviews of this research have not demonstrated that spinal manipulation is effective, with the possible exception of treatment of back pain. The efficacy and cost-effectiveness of maintenance chiropractic care are unknown. Chiropractic care is generally safe when employed skillfully and appropriately. However, spinal manipulation is frequently associated with mild to moderate adverse effects, with serious or fatal complications in rare cases. A systematic review determined that the risk of death from manipulations to the neck by far outweighs the benefits.

Could somebody recommend me a good chiropractic in Chicago?
Q. I am having some back pain an would like to go to a chiropractic to have my back fixed. How much would a session cost? Has anybody gone for the same problem? Thanks

A. There are many excellent chiropractic doctors in your area. If you are looking for a real deal. The National University of the Health Sciences is in Lombard. They have 4 clinics in the Chicagoland area. Search NUHS on the web. They are the best chiropractic university. They have the best facilities. You are worked on by interns with supervision by highly experienced doctors. The mosy important things are that these people are excellent at diagnosis and you will get chiropractic and physical therapy at a price that cannot be beat.

Can you get into chiropractic school with a GED?
Q. Due to some unfortunate circumstances, I likely will not be able to get my high-school diploma, but it's been my dream for a long time to be a chiropractor... Will a chiropractic college accept applicants with just a GED? Or are they as strict about admissions as a university?

A. I don't think Highschool grades or GED matter much. You would have to do the college pre-requisites to enter Chiro college though. It's basically pre-med. Some schools may even require a bachelors degree now. See the following site and check out the various colleges and their current requirements. Best of luck

A. First of all, that's asking a lot from a place like this. Someone who's actually qualified to do something like that is either not likely to be lurking around here (though, look at me, I'm qualified, yet here I am); and even if they are, they're not likely to want to do something that involved for free. I'd certainly be willing to take a look at it... and as long as I don't have to do TOO much work on it, I'll do it for free (I never used this place to drum-up business). But -- and don't get mad at me for this -- is right now really the best time to be jumping-off this particular cliff? As it happens, I know a lot about chiropractic practice. It's a tough business to get started. If you don't already have a bunch of clients that you… [cont.]
