How long has Great Britain used the metric system?
Q. Okay, in my Statistics class, for some reason we got on the discussion of the metric system. Our teacher said that whoever brings in any internet, book, magazine, etc. source of when Great Britain adopted the metric system will get extra credit on our next test. Does any body have any sources (internet, preferably) about when Great Britain adopted the metric system? Thanks!

A. The Weights and Measures Act 1963 said "The yard or the metre shall be the unit of measurement of length and the pound or the kilogram shall be the unit of measurement of mass by reference to which any measurement involving a measurement of length or mass shall be made in the United Kingdom." The Act defined Imperial units in terms of metric units. Presumably that's the point at which the UK officially recognised the metric system; and I suppose it adopted it by defining Imperial units in its terms. 1 yard is defined as exactly 0.9144m. The UK adopted decimal currency on 15 February 1971, but the idea of introducing 100 pence to the pound was raised in 1847; and the two-shilling coin with the inscription "one tenth of a pound" was… [cont.]

Why has Britain become increasingly violent because of the Blair/Brown government?
Q. Under Blair/Brown, Britain has become an increasingly violent society. The government has made over 3,000 new laws (more than any other in modern times) and there appears to be a strong correlation between that and the phenomenal rise in violence. Warning: Do not use Clarissa's link unless to want to be captured by one of those "persistent" advertising websites. You have been warned.

A. Most of the laws are rubbish and nosensical. But we have had a huge flux on immigrants. Not being racist but they do cause a lot of crime - all gun crime is black people or asians fighting eachother. I think also they are spending too much energy on stupid laws and crimes and neglecting REAL crimes. Criminals know you can get away with it. If you drink drive and run someone over you will just get community service.

How has Britain (and / or America) tried to close the gap between the rich and the poor?
Q. It's interesting me to look back through history at this issue. I'm mainly concerned about Britain, it being where the majority of my family history has taken place, but if you have any info on the U.S., too, I'd gladly listen. Basically, I'm wondering what steps Britain has taken in the past to close the gap between the rich and the poor.
