Traditional medicine (also known as indigenous or folk medicine) comprises medical knowledge systems that developed over generations within various societies before the era of modern medicine. Practices known as traditional medicines include herbal, Ayurveda, Siddha medicine, Unani, ancient Iranian medicine, Islamic medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, Muti, Ifá, traditional African medicine, and other medical knowledge and practices all over the globe.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines traditional medicine as:

"the health practices, approaches, knowledge and beliefs incorporating plant, animal and mineral-based medicines, spiritual therapies, manual techniques and exercises, applied singularly or in combination to treat, diagnose and prevent illnesses or maintain well-being."

In some Asian and African countries, up to 80% of the population relies on traditional medicine for their primary health care needs. When adopted outside of its traditional culture, traditional medicine is often called complementary and alternative medicine. Herbal medicines can be very lucrative, generating billions of dollars in sales, but adulteration or counterfeit herbs can also be a health hazard.

The WHO also notes, though, that "inappropriate use of traditional medicines or practices can have negative or dangerous effects" and that "further research is needed to ascertain the efficacy and safety" of several of the practices and medicinal plants used by traditional medicine systems. Core disciplines which study traditional medicine include ethnomedicine, ethnobotany, and medical anthropology.

How expensive is traditional chinese medicine in japan?
Q. I m going to be in Chiba for one year from september and i was wondering if traditional chinese medicine was cheaper there than it is here (germany). I have neurodermatitis at my hands which is probably caused by an allergy. Here in germany a 3 month therapy would cost around 450 euros. Is traditional chinese medicine in japan maybe cheaper than in germany?

A. I wonder if "traditional Chinese medicine" even exists in Chiba. Japan has mainly Japanese medicine. There is no need to have Chinese ones. I think you need to be more specific what kind of Chinese medicine it is.

Q. What are the advantges and disadvantages of naturopathy and traditional medicine?

A. I'm surprised nobody has answered yet. Some of the main benefits to natural medicines are that there are next to no side effects whereas drugs and surgery have huge lists of side effects. They are also more gentle on your body and are typically from natural plants and foods that many people have in their diets already. The main disadvantage that I've come across is that supplements and herbs give your body nutrition it's otherwise lacking in order to give a benefit (like eating when you're hungry makes you feel better). That's actually the same reason it's both good and bad, mostly because it depends on which nutrients your body is lacking as far as which one will give you the most benefit. That's also the reason you hear some people say… [cont.]

Is bipolar disorder a true disease or a concoction of traditional medicine?
Q. Is bipolar disorder a true disease or a concoction of traditional medicine?

A. Every other organ of the body that does not function correctly is considered to be diseased, and the person is said to have a disease. Bipolar is a disease of the organ called the brain. Neurontransmitters are involved as are ion channels, calcium channels, GABA, etc. Untreated there is a loss of grey matter long-term. It is very real. Medication makes a huge difference. Be glad you don't have because at times it sure ain't easy.
